Why does my handsome lad have "bare butt"?
In the above picture, Power has some hair on his thighs, BUT...
I wish some of you smart greyhound and other dog people would tell me why this happens!
But the reality is that with a face like this, who cares about the other end!

Most of the time he has a very bare skin on both legs! |

Polly has bald patches on her thigh. One has improved a bit, but the other is about the same. As with Power, who cares when they have such a beautiful face:)
ReplyDeleteI didn't notice the bare butt...I was busy looking at the quilt on the back of the couch! All three are beauties, Fleur, Power and the quilt. :)
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of different theories. Some people say diet makes a difference, and I think that it does. Other times, it can be a sign of low thyroid. It's also said that sometimes it's just genetic, and I think that does play a factor in it, too!
ReplyDeleteIt even has a name - bare thigh syndrome! (I think I'm remembering that correctly). As houndtooth said, no one really knows why. Both my hounds had it when I adopted them off the track. Jacks never went away but Molly grew a light coat of hair on her butt (really fuzzy in the winter). Jack was also bald on his tummy and chest.
ReplyDeleteBeryl had a lot more hair on her thighs and neck when I got her than she has now, she is the exception to the theory that they often grow it back when they've stopped racing and are in their forever home. I've tried quite a few things that I've heard encourage regrowth but nothing has helped. Like you with Power, who cares when they're so beautiful/handsome :) Asher has quite a hairy butt in comparison. He didn't race but I don't think that makes any difference. He hasn't grown any hair back on his couple of small bare patches in the 10 months he's been here. Oh, I did have Beryl's thyroid checked not long after I got her and she's perfectly normal for a Greyhound :)
