Stripes from Susan

When I asked my "sister" Susan to contribute an old shirt for the quilt, I had no idea what she would send.
When I got her shirt, I remember thinking that I had not expected her to send a striped seersucker.
I also had not realized ahead of time how very valuable those "Susan stripes" would be.

Above the navy blue is a black with tiny circles

If you look closely you can see that the black is disintegrating from age.

Looking above the navy, you see a section of "Susan stripes"

I had struggled to find the "right" fabric to replace the black, thinking I would need black again. But I realized that the "Susan stripes" is the perfect fabric for this and so you can see that it reflects the other wonderful colors.

New striped fabric going around this corner
One section of black fabric is yet to be replaced, the other sides are completed in the "Susan stripes"
The very best plans and expectations are sometimes surpassed by the gifts of the unexpected.

 Thanks, Susan!

  1. That's such a beautiful quilt. Can you imagine the hours and hours that have been spent on it throughout the years? All the cutting and planning and stitching... And now you are adding to the love that's part of it. Really cool! :)

  2. Do you work on it in your rig? I have my sewing machine with me, but haven't gotten it out. I don't have a table, so the only place for me would be outside on the picnic table. I haven't been inspired to do that yet. LOL

    Your quilt is beautiful!

    1. Patty, I do work on it in my rig. I do have a sewing machine, but am doing this quilt by hand only!
When I want to use my machine, I use a small folding table and sit in my favorite chair. Works well.
Thanks for the compliment on the quilt!

    1. I had never sewn with seersucker before, so I was nervous before hand!

  6. It's beautiful Hazel! So many loving hours have gone into that quilt. Does this quilt have a quilt label, if not while your repairing it you could add one.

    1. This quilt does not have a label and I really don't know about quilt labels, and I wonder if you would tell me?

    2. The "quilt label" is a piece of fabric with pertinent info written about the quilt...ie who made it, what city/state/country, year...if repairs are made, who made those and when. Then you hand stitch this to the back of the quilt in a corner. This way future generations will know who invested all this love to produce this quilt!
