The queen is resting |
The vet said that the dressings need to be changed every couple of days, so today will be my first try in getting the dressings changed.
I was looking on the website that Dr Suzanne Stack has written medical articles about greyhounds. http://www.greythealth.com/ In the article about injuries, she says that when feet are bandaged, that there should be cotton between the toes and also in the void between the pads on the underside of the foot. She says that without taking this precaution, the foot will be infected when the bandage comes off. So today when I take the dressing off, I'm hoping to find cotton between the toes and between the pads on the underside of the foot. I also hope that otherwise the incisions will look clean and healing.
I plan to have all kinds of cleaner solutions and bandage materials ready when I remove the stitches, so perhaps I won't end up with the feet unbandaged, and no way to wrap them again. She most likely won't be very cooperative.
More later!
Good luck with that.
ReplyDeleteThanks Judy, when we got to the vet's office, he took the dressing off and commented that the area is too moist and would need to left undressed and open to the air. He then said that I need to put a plastic bag on the feet when she goes outside, and when inside I must not let her mess with the area, but leave it alone! YIKES!
DeleteGood luck with the dressing changes, poor Fleur and poor you, too. I'm sure it will hurt you as much as it hurts her. I hope she will behave for you, and that it won't bother her too much. Let us know how it went. :)
ReplyDeleteWhen we left the vet, Fleur was a complete wreck (nervous) and I got her in the car, where she promptly started frantically chewing and licking on her feet! I went straight to a store and bought 6 pair of cotton socks to use as chew guards for nighttime.
DeleteOK so we have just gone through a month of bandaging a foot with Barbie, definitely the cotton wool between the toes and helped Barbie immensely but eventually she got chafing on the side of her foot where the bones stick out the most. I cannot recommend a Medipaws boot enough!!! It was much better than a plastic bag for outside trips. Otherwise you can ask the vet for IV bags - they are made of very stout plastic so they don't tear, and you can just put them on with a elastic band around the top.
ReplyDeleteTo prevent the dog messing with the bandage, I have found a plastic yard muzzle with the front solid plastic to be the most useful. Barbie liked to pull the stuffing out of her bandages towards the end so she had to wear her muzzle a lot.
I think my vet would recommend against cotton socks as the dog can still make them soggy, which makes the bandage wet :/
Jet, thanks so much for this info. I did not know about the medipaws boots. I looked them up after reading your comment. The yard muzzle I have, and the neck cone the vet loaned me. Fleur came unglued with the cone.
DeleteContinuing to send quick healing wishes to Fleur.
ReplyDeleteFleur is going to be fine, and I thank you for your warm healing wishes.
