Shocking emergency

Last night at 11:30 pm I heard a whimper and a thrashing sound, woke up, went to the living room, and found Fleur lying on the living room floor with her head twisted around, her eyes open, her legs unable to work, and generally looking very sick!

I called a friend to help me lift her to the car, and he was not answering his phone, so I called a ranger, woke him up, and he helped me lift her as far as the gravel outside.

Waiting for ranger, lying on my homemade quilt

I was unable to go further due to my own spinal problems, so we ended up calling a second ranger, and he then helped us get her into the back of the car!

Fleur on gravel, waiting for the second ranger

I  drove her 35 miles to the vet's hospital, where he did a complete neurological examination, and he said that we could do a neck X-ray to look for fractures.

Fleur on the X-ray table

She had no fractures, but was paralyzed, so we gave a large dose of cortisone, and pain medicine!

The vet put her into a soft bed with blankets and etc to keep her warm and as comfy as possible,  He stayed through the night with her and about 6:45 am she passed away.  He said that it was a type of stroke that caused the whole thing.  So this morning I will go to the vet to pay the bill and thank the vet again for her care!  I asked him to cremate her remains, so that he will care for her one last time!

Goodbye, loving and lovely Fleur!

  1. Oh, Hazel, I'm so sorry! I'm typing this with tears in my eyes, Fleur was my favorite ever Greyhound. She was so proud and graceful and beautiful, and she always wanted a pet and a little attention, then would lay down and keep her eye on things. We always said she and Katie were so alike. I can't imagine how you are feeling this morning. Please know that my thoughts are with you today, and also with Power - I'm sure he misses her, too. I'm so, so sorry.

  3. (((Hazel))) Oh hun I am so sorry. Fleur was a beautiful girl that had a wonderful life with you. She'll be playing with our fur babies at The Bridge until it's time for you to go and fetch her.

Polly and I will look at the stars tonight as there will be one that's extra bright.

  5. Oh Hazel, I am so incredibly sorry! I've loved reading about Fleur's adventures since I've found your blog and I am stunned to hear this news. I know there's nothing that can really make you feel better at a time like this, but I think that Fleur lived a truly charmed life with you. You have taken such good care of her, and taken her along on all kinds of adventures with you. I'm glad she didn't have to be sick and go through the things that entails and that she never knew a day when you didn't love and spoil her. Please know that our hearts go out to you and Power!

    1. We pet people go through these terrible times, don't we, but I truly believe that they enrich our lives and then our friends help us get through the losses. Thanks for your "hearts"

  7. This happened to me with my dog, Buddy. I know how upsetting it is to find them this way. I wish you peace as you receive Fleur's ashes and know that you were loved by Fleur and that Fleur knew you loved her!

  12. I saw the post over on Tales and Tails and had to come offer my condolences. Though we have not "met" via the Blogosphere, the incident reminded us so much of losing our own Kodiak during an RV trip. We know that feeling of helplessness as you are so far from the help you need at a moment like that.

    Please accept our deepest condolences.

  17. So very very sorry Hazel. Your heart must be breaking. At least she wouldn't have suffered but that is little consolation. Thinking of you and shedding some tears too. I know how I would feel if anything happened to any of my dogs, as it one day will. But we suck it up, carry on and remember the love and good times. Even though we know our hearts will be broken some time we wouldn't do without knowing and loving them and being loved in return. Take care.

  19. You know longer greet me,
As I walk through the door.
You're not there to make me smile,
    To make me laugh anymore.
    Life seems quiet without you,
You were far more than a pet.
You were a family member, a friend,
..A loving soul I'll never forget.

It will take time to heal
For the silence to go away.
    I still listen for you,
    And miss you every day.
You were such a great companion,
    Constant, loyal and true.
    My heart will always wear
the paw prints left by you.

  21. I am so very sorry to hear this. We are so helpless when they are hurt or ill. People find comfort in the thought of them running free at the Rainbow Bridge and I bet she is the leader of the pack, running with all her might?

  22. Holy Cr*p! So sorry to hear this. She was one lucky girl to have traveled and seen so much with you. I am going to go hug my hounds right now.
