Last night at 11:30 pm I heard a whimper and a thrashing sound, woke up, went to the living room, and found Fleur lying on the living room floor with her head twisted around, her eyes open, her legs unable to work, and generally looking very sick!
I called a friend to help me lift her to the car, and he was not answering his phone, so I called a ranger, woke him up, and he helped me lift her as far as the gravel outside.
Waiting for ranger, lying on my homemade quilt |
I was unable to go further due to my own spinal problems, so we ended up calling a second ranger, and he then helped us get her into the back of the car!

I drove her 35 miles to the vet's hospital, where he did a complete neurological examination, and he said that we could do a neck X-ray to look for fractures.

She had no fractures, but was paralyzed, so we gave a large dose of cortisone, and pain medicine!
The vet put her into a soft bed with blankets and etc to keep her warm and as comfy as possible, He stayed through the night with her and about 6:45 am she passed away. He said that it was a type of stroke that caused the whole thing. So this morning I will go to the vet to pay the bill and thank the vet again for her care! I asked him to cremate her remains, so that he will care for her one last time!
Goodbye, loving and lovely Fleur!
So sorry to hear of your loss. :(

DeleteOh, Hazel, I'm so sorry! I'm typing this with tears in my eyes, Fleur was my favorite ever Greyhound. She was so proud and graceful and beautiful, and she always wanted a pet and a little attention, then would lay down and keep her eye on things. We always said she and Katie were so alike. I can't imagine how you are feeling this morning. Please know that my thoughts are with you today, and also with Power - I'm sure he misses her, too. I'm so, so sorry.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your thoughts and memories!
DeleteI am so sorry. There are really no words to say. You are in my thoughts.
ReplyDeletePower, Chica and I are glad to hear from you!
Delete(((Hazel))) Oh hun I am so sorry. Fleur was a beautiful girl that had a wonderful life with you. She'll be playing with our fur babies at The Bridge until it's time for you to go and fetch her.
ReplyDeletePolly and I will look at the stars tonight as there will be one that's extra bright.
Thank you, Sue and Polly!
DeleteSo very sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much!
DeleteI have so few words, my heart aches for you
ReplyDeleteThanks for the thoughts!
DeleteOh Hazel, I am so incredibly sorry! I've loved reading about Fleur's adventures since I've found your blog and I am stunned to hear this news. I know there's nothing that can really make you feel better at a time like this, but I think that Fleur lived a truly charmed life with you. You have taken such good care of her, and taken her along on all kinds of adventures with you. I'm glad she didn't have to be sick and go through the things that entails and that she never knew a day when you didn't love and spoil her. Please know that our hearts go out to you and Power!
ReplyDeleteWe pet people go through these terrible times, don't we, but I truly believe that they enrich our lives and then our friends help us get through the losses. Thanks for your "hearts"
DeleteI am so very sorry for your loss. Words can not begin to express what I would like to convey to you at this time...Just know that your beautiful Fleur is an angel now and that she will live in your thoughts and heart forever.
ReplyDeleteThis happened to me with my dog, Buddy. I know how upsetting it is to find them this way. I wish you peace as you receive Fleur's ashes and know that you were loved by Fleur and that Fleur knew you loved her!
ReplyDeleteBarbara, thanks for the wise words and kindness!
DeleteI am so very sorry for your loss, Hazel. Words fail at a time like this, and I hope you find comfort in your happy memories of the adventurous life Fleur had with you.

DeleteSo sorry for your loss. I'm sure you have many wonderful memories. Biggy & Lorilei's mom
ReplyDeleteI saw the post over on Tales and Tails and had to come offer my condolences. Though we have not "met" via the Blogosphere, the incident reminded us so much of losing our own Kodiak during an RV trip. We know that feeling of helplessness as you are so far from the help you need at a moment like that.
ReplyDeletePlease accept our deepest condolences.
Thanks for the kindness in contacting me! Your Kodiak knew a great Mom or Dad!
DeleteWe are so sorry to hear of her passing. God bless for giving her a wonderful life and loving her.

ReplyDeleteHugs,
Noelle (Jackie's mom)
To Noelle and Jackie, Thanks for your prayers!
DeleteSo very very sorry Hazel. Your heart must be breaking. At least she wouldn't have suffered but that is little consolation. Thinking of you and shedding some tears too. I know how I would feel if anything happened to any of my dogs, as it one day will. But we suck it up, carry on and remember the love and good times. Even though we know our hearts will be broken some time we wouldn't do without knowing and loving them and being loved in return. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry..it is never easy. We are all thinking about you. Big hugs from the blog world.
ReplyDeleteYou know longer greet me,
ReplyDeleteAs I walk through the door.
You're not there to make me smile,
To make me laugh anymore.
Life seems quiet without you,
You were far more than a pet.
You were a family member, a friend,
..A loving soul I'll never forget.
It will take time to heal
For the silence to go away.
I still listen for you,
And miss you every day.
You were such a great companion,
Constant, loyal and true.
My heart will always wear
the paw prints left by you.

So sorry for your loss. ((hugs)
Heartbreaking. I also heard the news from Tales and Tails. My sincerest sympathy at your devastating loss. Fleur was lucky to be loved by you and vice versa.
ReplyDeleteI am so very sorry to hear this. We are so helpless when they are hurt or ill. People find comfort in the thought of them running free at the Rainbow Bridge and I bet she is the leader of the pack, running with all her might?
ReplyDeleteHoly Cr*p! So sorry to hear this. She was one lucky girl to have traveled and seen so much with you. I am going to go hug my hounds right now.
ReplyDeleteMy blogger program is not letting me send replies to the last few people who have sent me condolences..therefore I am writing in the comment form to THANK each person who took the time and the effort to share with me their caring!
ReplyDeleteOh, no! That is so very sad to hear. My heart goes out to you, Hazel. May you feel the support of all who have come to know your precious dogs through your blog and now share in your loss.
ReplyDeleteHazel, so sorry for the loss of Fleur. Hope to see you this winter.
ReplyDeleteSue and Steve
Steve and Sue, so nice to hear from you! I was thinking of you this morning, and was going to tell you that I am inviting you to meet with me in southern New Mexico for 1-2 months before going on to Quartzsite!
DeleteHazel, I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear you have lost your beloved Fleur. She had such a wonderful life with you, one every dog would envy and spent her last moments knowing you loved her and were trying your best to help her. My heartfelt condolences.
