Escape artist!

Mr eager beaver bragging about the fun he had!

Twice in the three weeks before he became ill,  Power slipped away and ran free for a few minutes!  I was beside myself, and the first time he was going too close to a state highway, and I was terrified.  It happened like this... I had his leash tied to my lawn chair and we were sitting in the shade of my motorhome, visiting with a neighbor and working on my quilt.

Somehow he realized that the knot on his leash had loosened then he sneaked away about three feet, and TOOK OFF!  He had so much fun!  If it hadn't been so dangerous I would have enjoyed watching him have fun!  I know that chasing him is counter productive but felt that I could not ignore his direction and speed, so off I went in my limping fashion,  and eventually he allowed me to catch up with him after he went through a ravine twice, and hundreds of yards along the highway.

I have realized that a knot is not sufficient, and I must get a carabiner or some such clip to be more secure.

  1. So glad Power did let you catch him. They do say you should run in the opposite direction whilst calling your dogs name.

Hope you can get a suitable clip.

    1. I never found running in the opposite direction to be effective. However I did find a good clip!

  2. Really too scary. After reading about RV Sue's night of terror looking for Spike, it makes us all rethink how we contain our pups while outside. I did like the suggestion of a clip on LED light on their collar at night. We have a black cocker and even though we always have a leash on him when he goes out at night, things happen in an instant, and finding a black dog

  3. (Con't) at night is impossible! (Sorry for the two posts, but it quit letting me type and heaven knows I had more to say!).

    1. Cathie, I have a pet locator on their collars, and a reflective collar around their necks, but in this case it was daytime and I could see him the whole time.
      Thanks for your interest!

  4. Glad Power made it through and didn't traumatize his mom too much. People think we are overdoing with carabiners where our leash attaches to the collar, and drop bars and carabiners on all gates in the yard, but it sure beats trying to chase down a greyhound

    1. I would not have thought of a car door, but in this case the car was elsewhere!

  6. I have seen this work with greys. When you spot them or they spot you, crouch down, lower your head and turn your back. Quietly calling their name helps but make some kind of noise to be sure you have their attention. Curiosity usually brings them to you and you're not a threat because, by crouching, lowering your head and turning your back, you are "submissive." When they come up close, take hold of the collar (try not to lunge for it because that can scare them off) and praise, praise, praise. I've used it and it works but you've got to be patient. Having another greyhound with you helps, too. You know how they flock together. Glad it all worked out.

    1. I did what you suggest, but my mojo wasn't on duty that day!

Your details are very helpful. Thanks for going to this effort to educate me.

  7. If one of ours got loose, I'd either run away from them or fall down. It works every time so far.

    1. I tried that a couple of times, but maybe I wasn't dramatic enough!

  8. This would be very scary! I hope Power doesn't do it again. Asher has no recall and I've tried running away from him at home and the falling down thing and he just stands and looks at me like I'm crazy. Actually Beryl probably would do the same, lol!

    1. Asher has an advantage over Power... Power would not stand and look, he would look, and speed up!
      Thanks for your support!

  9. So sorry! I know how scary it is to have a loose hound. So glad you found Power and that is back home with you.
